Hi all,

Hope you don't mind the cross-posting, but this is such a recondite question
I thought I'd send it to as many people as possible. Some trusting
individual has sent me this message:

"I have just one question.
I am looking for a book, which explains the connenctions between the I-Ching
and the Wing Chun-Kung Fu Style.
I would be very grateful if I could get an advice where to find such a book.
Thank you very much in advance!"

And I am clueless. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hilary

Greeting Hilary. I began studying Wing Chun in 1994, and even
traveled to mainland China with my shifu to meet some of the
old masters. But, I haven't heard of any connection between
Wing Chun and Yijing....

List member Dr. Twicken also studies Wing Chun and Yijing,
maybe he can shed some light on this subject.

Perhaps your friend is thinking of the BaGua (Pa Kua) style
of kung fu?

Hilary,

I don't know of any specific title off hand
but I have a few thoughts that you might want
to pass on to your friend.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the early books
by Bruce Lee, who studied Wing Chun in his
youth, mentions some connection or the
philosophical relationship between the two
subjects.

Does your friend read Chinese? I'm in
China at the moment and can certainly
see if there isn't such a book in one
of the stores here.

Also, although we don't directly mention
Wing Chun, there is a chapter in our new
book, A Brief History of Qi, that talks
about qi and the martial arts. It's an
indirect approach to some of the same
substantive issues that might be found
in a discussion of the Yi and martial arts.

Hope that helps.

Cross posting again. Just to say thank you very much for all the thoughtful
responses on Wing Chun. I have forwarded them (properly attributed!) to the
questioner, and I'll let you know if I hear from him again.

Thanks for bailing me out ;-)

I enjoyed last night's lecture at the Theosophical Society.

I don't know if anyone else from Hex-8 made it along?

The audience was a mixture of absolute beginners, interested newcomers and more experienced I Ching people.

The lecturer, Sue, started from scratch and introduced the concepts of Yin and Yang building up to the Trigrams and Hexagrams. Nothing spectacular but she did have a medical viewpoint which was new to me.

For example, she said that the 6 lines of each hexagram could be taken as, reading upwards, feet, calves, waist/thighs, abdomen, chest and head.

She had several translations with her including a copy of "The Medical I Ching" (can't remember the author) which I'd never seen before.

We only had about an hour and a half, so it was an enjoyable sprint through some familiar concepts, interrupted by all sorts of questions and finishing with a consultation.

Sue asked the audience for a question to put to the I Ching and (surprise, surprise) someone came up with, "Will Osama Bin Laden be captured". We agreed to let each line represent a month, so that the answer covered the next 6 months.

We got 56 changing line 1.

Great answer to represent someone on the run from an apparently defenceless position, don't you think?

There might a more advance talk planned for next year.

Best wishes,

Mick

Hope everyone is having a nice Winter break.

Today I came across Master Alfred Huang's website:

http://www.ichingmaster.net/

For those who don't know it, I'd say it's definitely worth a look.

If only the "studies" section were complete, then it would be a really great site. Any thoughts anyone?

I also discovered that Master Huang was scheduled to visit Europe last Summer for a conference in Zurich amongst other things. I'd have loved to have gone, did anyone on this list attend his workshops?

Regards and best wishes for 2002,

Mick
