Signal-to-noise is an electronic mailing list for announcements about, and discussion of, the Flash Girls, and related topics.

The Flash Girls are an award-winning duo, featuring Emma Bull (vocals, guitar) and the Fabulous Lorraine (vocals, fiddle). They play original and traditional music. Some of their songs are written by Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Jane Yolen, Adam Stemple, and Dorothy Parker.

Emma Bull and Will Shetterly moved to Los Angeles, California a few years ago; Lorraine Garland remains in Minnesota. The band is now geographically challenged, but not dead.

There were Flash Girls reunion shows at Convergence in July, 2000. And while Emma was in Minnesota for Convergence, she recorded tracks for the third Flash Girls album.

The third Flash Girls album (Play Each Night, Wild Queen) will probably be released sometime in May or June 2001. You'll be able to get it from Fabulous Records and Dreamhaven Books, among other places (I'd expect). When it's available, we'll post about it here and on the mailing lists.

There are 13 new songs on the album, including some written by Neil Gaiman. Additional performers include Steven Brust, Todd Menton, Lojo Russo, and Adam Stemple and Robin Anders of Boiled in Lead. Cover art by Michael Zulli. Lorraine says: "The CD has both a backwards message and a volcano, as all the best ones do."

You can get Flash Girls albums (and cool albums by friends of the Flash Girls) from Fabulous Records.

You can also get Flash Girls and Neil Gaiman items from Dreamhaven Books.

Emma Bull and Will Shetterly are among the guests of honor at Minicon 37, which will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota the weekend of March 29-31, 2002. Sounds like a good place for a Flash Girls reunion concert, doesn't it?

Signal-to-noise will continue for as long as we have listmembers interested in discussing the music of the Flash Girls, as well as the other projects of Emma Bull and Lorraine Garland. As there isn't much current flashnews, the list often talks of books, stories, movies, and other music.

Fans of Emma, Lorraine, Will Shetterly, Neil Gaiman, Lojo Russo, Steven Brust, Pamela Dean, Raphael Carter, Jane Yolen, Diana Wynne Jones, Terri Windling, Kara Dalkey, John M. Ford, and other fine folk will perhaps be most at home here. Most of us like the Borderlands books and the Ballads comics from Green Man Press. We've also been known to talk about Xena and Jackie Chan (though not usually in the same message) and other stuff due to the wonders of topic drift and the diverse interests of listmembers (and the Flash Girls themselves). The list is pretty quiet at the moment, but this can change within a few hours if folks get to talking.

Flash Girl alter-egos, Pansy Smith and Violet Jones, appear in the comic book Sovereign Seven.
