Porpoise

by Columbine

You tried so hard to talk to me
Learn my you-hear singing
I thought to break my meaning up
Into your broken chatter
All we ever really shared
Was surface-shimmer wonder
I can make words, you can have thoughts
And pass them to each other
Acknowledgement all rushed and halting
Did I understand you?
This is warm, and this is under
This is yes, this no
Pieces like a reef's vast shape
Spelled out in shrinking polyps
Crowded, yet not touching
For the spaces in between
For the chitin and the coughing
That shall lie forever twixt us
The emptiness that you call air
The soundless disconnection
For it is what is to be for you
To live as severed fragments
And we are what being is for us
To be as being is
