Refugee Pardoned

by Columbine

This cool forgiving cloudy afternoon
That sighs leafy contentment, hard-won peace
Brings strange and restive thoughts, for I'd as soon
Be earning, not enjoying this release
For when I jokingly prayed for surcease
The play of chance refreshed my weary eyes
The music that I love did more than please
It sang my every second's smiles and sighs
My memory of the taste of shattering lies
Gives chocolate a flavor dull as lead
Am I then mad, strife to so highly prize
Reserving calm repose for when I'm dead?
The love that once my raging heart sustained
Now festers like a wound too soon contained.
