Snake Song

by Columbine

When I was little Mama was a sailor
She rode the Moon Boat, the stars were her children
My siblings and I glowed with awestruck wonder
To see her standing at its shining prow
Her faithful friend Snake sang songs of renewal
Dog taught us loyalty, Cat independence
As round the world we coursed waxing and waning
Dancing naked the pulse of light and dark
Now she stands in a corner of the garden
The sea's might arching over and behind her
Her outstretched hand still open to the sailors
Who somewhere in their hearts yet recognize her
And often you'll see Snake waiting there with her
Patiently whispering in loops and circles
The soft unending chant of death and rebirth
Of when we'll dance naked with her again
