Legend has it that Odin told the goddess Gefion that she could have whatever land she could carve off of Sweden in a single night. So she hitched up her oxen and ploughed a furrow between Sjaelland--the island on which Copenhagen is located--and the Swedish mainland. It must have been a long night!
