Sir Walter Scott, the author of nineteenth century romantic novels like Ivanhoe and The Scarlet Pimpernel, was a major force in the popularization of Highland cultural motifs and is credited with essentially making up a lot of the modern versions thereof for the festivities in honor of George IV's visit to Edinburgh in 1822.
