The Dents do exactly one thing, and they do it perfectly. If you want anything but fast, fun, tuneful punk rock delivered with a snarl, a grin, and sweet, sweet harmonies, it's not on the menu. If you want that, though, there's no one better to get it from than The Dents. Tonight there's a Tuesday night kind of crowd at TT's, smallish but vociferous in our enthusiasm, and The Dents kick it out like they were playing Wembley. I don't think they have a lower gear. Gino needs a second cinder block to keep from kicking his drums off the stage. They're that kind of band.
The Paybacks, from Detroit, are mining a very similar vein. They are fronted by a fabulous raspy screamer of a woman. I love her, though if I didn't I'd be scared to say so; she'd kick my fuckin' ass. There's some fun by-play suggesting that the guys in the band are all kicked around by the singer, and you have to believe it. These guys all have mics, and they sing some really gorgeous three-part harmony backups on a few songs. The Paybacks are very vocal about their appreciation for The Dents and The Knee-Hi's (whom I didn't get to see) and they rock very hard.
