Unfortunately, I don't really get to see Lincoln Conspiracy's set, as we were seeing Cirque du Soleil tonight. (Varekai, at Suffolk Downs; it's really good, and I recommend seeing it if you've got the money to spare.) They're playing when I walk in, and it's beautiful, lush, stately piano pop with fun energy, then it's one Wings cover and they're done. Next time.
Scamper are bidding farewell to their bassist tonight and, for reasons which are not really clear to me, they have decided to celebrate his time with them and mourn his departure by growing big, cheesy '70s porn-star mustaches for this show. Keith and Nate, who normally look like the kind of boys mom always wished you'd play with, look deliciously skeevy. For maximum verisimilitude, they should be playing an entire set of cheesy funk covers, but in fact it's a Scamper set. This means tight, catchy, gloriously sugary pop fun. Delightful melodies and gorgeous harmonies. And one last synchronized jump for the road, impressive as ever. In addition to all our favorite Scamper originals, they do a really, really cool cover: a rocked up version of "Wicked Game." It's perhaps the only time I've ever heard them play in a minor key, and the only time I've ever heard anyone make a Chris Isaak song rock. Sometimes uncharacteristic can be a beautiful thing.
