December 18, 2004: The Stone Coyotes and The Unbusted at TT's

The Unbusted are a fun little band. Kind of indie rock, kind of pop punk, and thus a bit difficult to describe in any more detail than that. But the songs are catchy, well played, and well sung, and there's some nice harmony singing from the bassist. (A bit of really sour harmony singing, too, on one song, but nice overall.) Guitar parts are kind of simple but fit the songs well.

Now, I'm a huge Stone Coyotes fan, and have been begging them to come do a show in (well, near) Boston for months. So I'm tremendously excited. When we've seen them in Northampton, they had hours to play, and so their sets had quiet, mellow, folky parts and loud, raucous, energetic parts. Tonight is a forty minute set, so it's all rock. (I'm not exactly complaining.) I'm pleased to see a good turnout for their set, and it's not just fans of Juliana Hatfield (tonight's headliner); lots of people know their songs, screaming for favorites and singing along. I've characterized their music before as basic, slightly countrified bar-band rock, perfected. And that's what we get. Barbara's a demon of Wah tonight, and even her bandmates occasionally shake their heads and grin at what she's doing. And I'm struck anew by the baroque beauty of the bass lines, particularly in one song where the guitar and bass play a complicated riff in octaves for a great effect.
