my stuff:
people:
1992
Off we fled
From Reading, Mass.
A place where church and state are one
Looking for a late night meal
Leaving behind that blue law special
Driving past the Donut Master
North
Route 28
We turn west and find Salem
But Salem is on the east coast!
We wanted weird
We found New Hampshire instead
On the road
Until the end of the world
Well, we got it anyway.
We walked into Denny's at midnite-thirty
My jaw hung slack
"We're small town boys"
I told the stewardess
"And we've heard you're open all night."
She looked at me and answered
"All night, every night, hon.
Smoking or non?"
I had an omlette
Dave, some country fried steak
We shared the onion rings.
Two cups of coffee,
A wipe of the napkin,
And we paid up front.
Driving home,
Before I started hallucinating
(it must have been the coffee),
We saw a cop
Who'd pulled over a donut truck.
Maybe he couldn't wait.
The further we drove,
The more the police.
Flashing blue lights,
Speeding blue cars.
Someone who drove into a tree.
Maybe he couldn't wait.
