Insertion of the needle felt like... well... insertion of a needle. Halfway between a pinch and something much more unpleasant. They warn you beforehand, saying that the needle isn't the painful part, that it'll sting a bit when they actually inject the vaccine. They were right -- one's body has an immediate reaction and the whole area inflames slightly. Between the forcing of fluid into the flesh and the body going somewhat haywire it is a rather painful experience of a few elastic, well-stretched moments soaked in small hurt with a hint of fear. But that isn't the problem. The problem is, for those long, long moments the imagination is prone to running rampant through the fields of memory and images, and the particular one mine locked onto was the needle, thickening.
