April 29, 2003: Ad Frank and the Fast, Easy Women and the Shelley Winters Project at the Lizard Lounge

Tonight marked the last night of Ad Frank's Tuesday night residency at the Lizard. Ad and the boys really seemed to enjoy themselves, and the crowd was very enthusiastic.

We came in during the Shelley Winters Project's set. This band has been around approximately forever, and Rick Berlin since well before that. And yet somehow, in all that time, I'd never seen him or them. Clearly, I've been missing out. A few of his songs had a sort of goofy feel to them, in a way that I didn't exactly like, but several of them really rocked. I like his keyboard style, I like his guitarist a LOT, and I just love his violinist/backup singer. I like rock violin a lot, as I've had occasion to mention recently, and she was really, really good. I need to see these folks again, and start making up for lost time.

Ad Frank came out next, in a fetching little sailor number, and played a couple of songs solo with piano. Ad was in excellent voice tonight; his voice is usually the only thing wrong with his shows for me, but tonight it was just fine. And his piano has this lovely, heartbreakingly fragile quality to it. Very nice. After two songs, the Fast, Easy Women joined him on stage, all in fetching little sailor numbers! It was fabulous. On keyboards tonight was a woman (Kirsten? Kristen? Something like that.) who I believe has played with them before, but whom I hadn't seen. She did great backing vox and played quite well, although there were times when I felt that the keyboard was mixed too loud. I did also miss Mike Quinn, whom I quite liked and was (am) hoping they'll make permanent. Their set was raucous and great, with the guitarist in particularly fine form tonight, even vocally. (I've not been such a fan of his backing vocals in the past, but this was apparently Good Voice Night.) Even though they didn't play Tom's request, we had a good time, and the audience would not be denied their encore.

We left after their set, since we just saw the Fly Seville recently and were not so impressed, and we're having a busy week.
