June 7, 2005: WFNX Best Music Poll Party with Dresden Dolls, The Kaiser Chiefs, and Dear Leader at Avalon

Okay, this was part of another string of shows that I didn't write anything about in a timely fashion; here's what I remember about it a month later:

I've never really liked Dear Leader. I'm just not a big fan of Aaron Perrino's singing. I like Paul Buckley, their drummer, but consider him underutilized in this context. I liked The Kaiser Chiefs a lot more than I would have expected. He did a bit too much of the "Come on! Let me hear you make some noise!" thing that I so often find so annoying. (Memo to band: play something exciting, and I'll get excited. I promise.) But once he calmed down with that and concentrated on singing, they were really pretty good. They kept reminding me of Devo, oddly enough, but a Devo that had heard '90s rock radio. Probably the most striking part of the evening happened during their set, when Amanda Palmer ran on stage buck naked, kissed the lead singer, and ran off. (Said lead singer, after the next song: "I've never performed that song with an erection before.") Then the Dolls played, and it was nice because we had just seen their DVD shoot show two days prior, and this was a very different set, with more of the new material that they probably deliberately kept back when shooting the DVD. Brian veered a little wild at times, sort of staggering away from the beat in some of his crazier bits, but it was a virtuoso display for all that.
