July 1, 2005: The Charms at TT's

The Charms are kind of the odd band out on tonight's bill; the rest of the bands seem to be variations on the roots/rockabilly theme. Since that's not our thing, we're really just here for The Charms. They have a brand new album out, and tonight's set draws heavily from it. The Charms formula is great, basic rock songs, killer hooks, and more flash and sass than you can handle. The new songs manage to branch out a bit without abandoning this fundamentally successful approach. "Life in Movies" adds a lush, sultry Blondie feel to their repertoire, and "Losing My Addiction" (my personal favorite) puts Ellie's vocals and charisma so far out front that they're like a whole other band member. This is also the first (and possibly last) time I've seen them with Bill Trevaskis filling in on bass. He's a good fit for them, flashy and dynamic without drawing focus away from the front line; if his more permanent replacement is almost as good, they'll be doing very well indeed.
