October 13, 2005: Night Rally at Planet Aid

This was a very early show, and I couldn't leave work in a timely fashion, so I've missed all of Reports and Night Rally's first two songs as well. Damn the need to earn a living anyway. When I come in they're playing a new song, a longish and somewhat repetitive instrumental. I'm still a bit flustered and I find this one hard to get into. The next song, though, is another new one, and it rules. It sounds like a Night Rally song—arty, delay-heavy guitar atmospherics and supple, complicated drum parts are anchored and driven by excellent, melodic bass, and all three members sing in complementary vocal styles—and really, what more do I need? The working title is so regrettable that I won't even repeat it here, but the song itself is a keeper. Between songs, they pun repeatedly (sometimes cleverly, sometimes painfully) on clothing, since the whole show is happening in a corner of a used clothing store in Harvard Square. (I'm standing next to a rack of hideous dresses.) It's a deeply odd setting, and thus perfect for them, and it's fun to give Devin something to riff on. They move on to older material, and finish up with "A Birthday Party," in honor of Chris from Piles' birthday today. Devin ends this song by leaving his microphone behind and taking it to the audience, bellowing his last repeating part directly at individual audience members seated on the floor. It's weird and right.
