I show up during this band's first song. I am tired and grumpy from a trying and sort of unsuccessful day at work, and I've never heard of this band before, and they're playing a very gentle, tuneful sort of indie rock. It's very nice, even soothing, and I think I'm going to want to scream. But in fact, they're really good, and they slowly win me over. Yes, it can be kind of like trying to grab onto jello. But the songs are catchy and have a certain gentle grandeur to them. The guitars are fairly simple, the bass lines are way out front and pretty interesting, the drums are quite good, and it's all very solid. All four of them sing at various times, so there's good use of harmony. As the set progresses, they even find a kind of energy; it's weird, because they never really rock out, but several of the songs acquire an unmistakable momentum. They do end with another slow one, and then there's an awkward interlude where there isn't quite the enthusiasm to make an encore obvious, but there's just a bit too much to give up without a fight, so about a dozen people wind up clapping intermittently for several minutes, and a couple of the band members even return to the stage briefly before realizing that the others are not going to join them.
