Well, I missed Major Stars' set; fucking job! Uptight are a psych trio from Japan. Their singer/guitarist is, in Deb's words, "the very picture of a Japanese rock star." He also gives the clear impression of having memorized about six phrases in English to say between songs, which is charming. Their music is rooted in The Velvet Underground, but with more squalls of guitar noise on top. It's good stuff, kind of basic and easy to get lost in.
Old Time Relijun is also a three-piece. They are very, very simple and very, very weird. The ultra-basic instrumental stuff I find pretty underwhelming, but the guitarist's singing, replete with yelps and growls and occasional snatches of throat singing, do sort of elevate the overall experience. He's also pleasantly bizarre between songs. I don't quite last their whole set—it's Monday night, and I'm tired—so I don't get to hear what he does with the saxophone that I saw him sound-checking.
