Note: I didn't really write anything about this show at the time, so here's what I remember about it almost a month later.
Unable to leave work in a timely manner, I can only get here for Ketman's last few songs. I am disappointed to hear that they did a whole bunch of new material that I missed. The few I do hear are good, with their usual blend of singing and screaming over twangy punk guitar and a killer rhythm section.
Abigail Warchild are seriously odd. They're kind of loud and punky, but with tuneful, almost pretty keyboards and a freaky/arty vibe from the lead vocalist. He spends a lot of between-songs time thanking his parents for having sex.
Badman set up and start playing, and I'm confused. Unbeknownst to me, they have lost their percussionist. As a three-piece, they still have strong songs and a unique sound: poetic, countrified art-rock with lots of dark waltzes. I miss some of the additional percussion; more percussion is almost invariably going to be more to my tastes. The consolation prize is that, without the additional activity in the rhythm band, it is more apparent just how ridiculous their drummer is. He's got A LOT going on in there!
Polaris Mine are a find ending to an all-weird night. They marry an arty, noisy sensibility to solid pop songcraft and present it with talent and a winning awkwardness, which sort of pulls together all of what we've seen tonight.
